Specklebelly

During our goose hunt on Saturday, we saw something' that we'd never seen before... a damned ol' specklebelly. Also known as white-fronted geese, they don't spend too much time east of the Mississippi. A handful of them do show up in some PA bag limits every now and again, though.

We had a bunch of birds circlin' us, when all of the sudden we heard this funky call. As soon as the birds swung around in front of us and we saw the small bird with the distinct black barring on its undercarriage, we knew exactly what it was. The bird was in range, but we held off, thinking we were gonna sit 'em down right in front of us. Not so, though... they saw somethin' they didn't like, and headed off to parts unknown. Probably better we didn't shoot though.... whoever knocked him down would have certainly taken on a taxidermy bill to go with it.

Unfortunatly, they weren't the only birds that saw somethin' ugly. We should have bagged a ton, but only managed to get a few birds to committ. We had a lot of birds flare off at the last minute. Had a great day though. In addition to seein' that speck, we had thousands of ducks circlin' us all day, and saw more than our share of geese as well. Great time in the blind with family and friends, so it was a day well spent.

Dad, Libby, Wade and Joe with our day's bag.

Sunday, my lady and I went to Icefest over in Chambersburg. Basically a bunch of hillbillies with chainsaws get together and chop away on huge blocks of ice, then have a big party in downtown Chambersburg. It was pretty laid back when we were there, but they have all sortsa stuff goin' on all weekend. If you're ever bored and in the area, you should check it out sometime. The ice sculptures themselves are worth makin' the trip. It's free, therefore good, cheap entertainment for the kids and us oldsters as well.

This is another one of these bands that the ol' man got me listening to at an early age. Still tourin' and makin' great music, too. We were watching the snowboard halfpipe on the X-Games last night, and Shaun White had these guys playin' before his runs. Good to see I'm not the only dude that can get cranked up with some Maiden.

Spring Gobbler 2010

I finally got around to gittin' four years or so worth of footage off my video camera. Now I gotta try and figger out how to edit 'em and make 'em pretty. I started with my second gobbler from last spring, since it was a shorter clip, thus easier to work on. More to come as I get around to it...

Small Game Weekend

Matt, Bear, Joe, Kevan and Erik

I'll just throw it out there - me and my boys ain't small game hunters.

Collectively, we can kill the hell outta deer, geese, turkeys, and bear. We can build houses, run plumbing and electrical, wrench on trucks, run farms, rip apart computers, write and tell great stories. But when it comes to layin' down a limit of bunnies, grouse and squirrels, well, we just ain't that good.

But that doesn't stop us from headin' up to Bradford County every now and then to try.

We've gotten together for the last three or four years for a Small Game Weekend, otherwise known as Scoutin'/Eatin'/Drinkin'/Mental Heath Weekend. In those few years, we've only managed two grouse, three bunnies and a small handful of squirrels. And yeah, we've been known to miss every now and again.

And this year was no different. We pushed for small game for several hours, and did a set-up for coyote for the last hour of daylight. The final game bag? One squirrel.

But hey, we had a great time. We got to walk around in the snow and the cold for awhile, and enjoy us some outdoors. We had us an impromptu shooting match, usin' snowballs instead of clay birds. We ate plenty of great food, drank a few cold ones at the local watering hole, watched and talked about huntin', and got a good break from real life and the monotonous winter bullshit.

And hell, that's what it's all about. Thanks to Ron for puttin' us up and lettin' us get away for a few days, and lettin' me steal your pictures.

No jumpin' outta the hot tub and doin' drunken snow angels this year.

Wonder why we're in a recession?

Check out this list of programs the new house has proposed cutting, put together by the good folks over at Gottagetdrunkfirst....

Pretty staggering that we're funding half of this bullshit to begin with.

Mother Trucker!

Fuel efficient? Doubt it.

Completely awesome? Absofuckinlutely.

Wednesday Grind

I'm nothin' if unoriginal. Some of my favorite bloggers (see my links) post some great music, but most of it's on the weekends. Thus, I bring you the Wednesday Grind. If you need some good hate metal to get you through the shittiest day of the week, look no further. Consider this the inbred stepson of my Illegal Download of the Post.

War Nerve, from Pantera's 1996 album, The Great Southern Trendkill. This one's a live track from Moline, Illinois from Nov. '96. Big fan of Pantera... Phil & Co. got this ol' boy through many football games and motorcycle miles.
