Ol' Pappy

My paternal grandfather passed away early Saturday mornin'. It had been a pretty rough year for him healthwise, and it finally caught up to him.
My aunt's ex-husband, Philip Colgan, painted this
portrait of Grandpa many years ago.

I will always remember him as one of the most honest and respectful men I've ever met. The son of farmers, and a lifelong dairy farmer, he has always been one helluvea workin' man. He not only juggled the farm, but for many years he held down a full-time and part-time job on top of a wife and nine kids. He always made time for his family though, and I'll always remember how happy he'd be when the whole family got together for the holidays. He had a way about talkin' to ya that made you feel like special. I took him up to huntin' camp a few times, and I'd always enjoy listenin' to the old stories as we headed up the road. He was incredibly hard of hearin', which is a shame, because it made it extremely difficult to hold a good conversation with him. We could usually get our point across after awhile though, and then he would offer his sage advice (usually spot-on, of course).

I'll stop there while I'm ahead. Suffice it to say, we'll sure miss havin' that ol' codger around.

It's been a tough year for all the Pappys that I know. Both of my grandfathers, my girl's grandfather, two close friend's grandfathers, and a family friend who was like an adopted grandfather to me have all passed in 2013.

As with Grandpa Reinhart back in May, I'm postin' the obit here for my future reference.

  1. I was just telling my wife how the 8th was my mother's fathers 124th birthday. He was a smart old farmer when I knew him. All the old guys died for me years ago, they are missed. Kind of a tribal thing, we need our wise old guys and they are hard to find. You are lucky to have had access to him as many didn't make it to his age.

  2. Glad he's finally at peace. Sorry for your loss.
