No Casino Gettysburg

There won't be a casino in my backyard anytime soon.

After a vote this morning, the seven-member Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board will not be awarding a license to the Mason-Dixon Resort & Casino.

Instead, the board voted 6-1 to grant the last available license to the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, in Wharton Township, Fayette County.

Gettysburg businessman David LeVan and former state legislator Joseph Lashinger Jr. sought the license to convert the Eisenhower Inn & Conference Center on Emmitsburg Road to a gaming resort with 600 slot machines and 50 table games.

Many Adams County residents supported their project because of the potential economic benefits. But preservationists and historians have condemned the plan because it would be about 0.8 miles from the southern border of Gettysburg National Military Park.

I personally was in favor of the casino, from the standpoint of more jobs and a little tax relief. I'm not strugglin' yet, but a lotta my family and buddies are havin' a tough go as of late. A casino mighta helped things out.

Alas, the bleedin' heart wombats, who seem to be against anything that brings money into our local economy, won this little battle. Hell, no, we can't have gambling here. It will ruin the reputation of our quaint little town! Gambling is eeeeeeeevil!

Good logic. I bet none of those good men that fought and died in my backyard had playin' cards or dice in their rucksacks or anything like that. Nope, no gamblin' here.

Oh well. Someone else's local economy got a boost, and I'm happy for them.
